the corner of Chouteau Avenue and 39th street, the 86 year-old brick
building with distinctive red and green windows gives King Louies
an engaging presence. In an area once known as Billy Goat Hill,
a Serbian-immigrant enclave where goats did, in fact, roam the grassy
slopes, this former hospitality room for the Otto F. Stifel Union
Brewery has metamorphasized into a unique dining and drinking experience.
Once inside,
the Tigers Eye Oak bar (one of only 35 in the country), exposed
wood trusses, cozy fireplace and private booths with illuminated
heirloom lamps provide a splendid backdrop the award-winning wine
list and market influenced, contemporary cuisine.
In the Spring
of 2001, the new Louies LEtoile dOr or Gold
Star Bar opened adjacent to the restaurant. This 65 seat area
welcomes the diner to a club-like atmosphere with French doors opening
onto an outdoor café overlooking a majestic train yard bending
into the horizon. It is a place where St. Louis under-appreciated
sunsets can truly be savored. The bar menu features lighter-fare
including appetizers, oysters, innovative twists on classic bistro
dishes and desserts.
Dinner at
King Louies is noticeably incomplete if one doesnt take
advantage of McGuires outstanding wine list. The list, which
compliments and changes with the menu, contains wines from limited-supply
boutique wineries, as well as internationally recognized producers,
all at a good value. We also offer over 40 wines by the glass or
half-bottle.
King Louies
is a jewel in midtown St. Louis. A rare combination of wonderfully
prepared food, great ambience and service dedicated to personal
satisfaction.
